Remote & hybrid work wisdom

Get the 5-minute newsletter helping thousands of people grow their remote skills and decrypt the world of global work.

Some work-from-home jobs are entry-level jobs for those new to the work, while others are suited to those who previously did the same job onsite. Either type of job might require education or training to be considered.

As a remote worker, you have to start somewhere. Fortunately, job seekers can find remote work-from-home jobs with no experience jobs on job boards, freelancing platforms, and LinkedIn. These opportunities are often flexi-time, whether they are full or part-time.

What are the main industries for entry-level work-at-home jobs? Are there some who pay well? How can you land a remote job with no work experience?

How Can I Work From Home And Make Money?

When you want to make money working from home, there are several options. First, decide if you want to be self-employed or work remotely for a company. Next, think about your interests, regardless of your education or experience.

What do you think you’ll be good at? What industry do you want to build your career in? Which jobs/projects do you see yourself taking on long-term in order to succeed as a remote worker?

Finally, search for a full-time or part-time remote job or look for multiple clients to combine freelance projects each month. Alternatively, you can open an online shop or create courses on a topic you’re knowledgeable about and sell them online on websites like Udemy and Coursera.

Learn or Improve Skills That Will Help You Thrive While Working From Home

Remote workers need a specific set of skills to ensure success. They should:

  • Be self-motivated
  • Have good time-management skills
  • Have great written communication
  • Be tech-savvy
  • Have the ability to focus
  • Work well alone and in a team
  • Be reliable
  • Know how to solve problems independently

“A critical skill in working remotely is the ability to manage one’s own time and attention. To practice self-awareness and managing autonomy, consider volunteering in an online community. Nonprofits (church, academia, charity, philanthropy, etc.) tend to serve a distributed base, which will enable you to learn the nuances of connecting people and information across geographies.”

Re-vamp Your Resume

Focus on your skills when looking for work-from-home jobs with no prior experience. Polish your resume to highlight your expertise and related skillsets. Tailor it to match the company’s values and the specific position you’re applying for to help you stand out and get hired faster.

Be sure to include any volunteer experience you have where you managed a group of people, worked under pressure, or followed/created a strict schedule.

Start Your Job Search

Join a couple of job boards and set up a job alert for entry-level work-from-home jobs. Many jobs fit night or weekend hours and could be perfect for your needs.

Looking at a typical entry-level job description, you’ll notice a high school diploma, good communication skills, and proficiency in English are usually required. Keep in mind some employers may consider candidates with a college degree first, even though it’s not a must.

Be persistent until you get an offer, as you’re likely to compete with many candidates who also have no experience.

Be Productive As You Wait

While you wait, take care of the technicalities — make sure you have a good internet connection at home and invest in a suitable laptop for remote work if you don’t already have one.

What Are Some Work-From-Home Jobs That Pay Well?

High-paying, in-demand work-from-home opportunities are available to skilled beginners as well as experts. Here are some examples of remote roles that pay well:

  • Graphic designer
  • Software/app developer
  • Content writer
  • Healthcare customer service agent
  • E-commerce manager
  • Digital marketer
  • Content/SEO manager

If you’ve had no luck landing one of these jobs for a prolonged period, consider applying to paid or unpaid internships to gain valuable experience and guidance for your career. Plus, you may be offered a position at the company after your internship program ends.

Another approach is to find a job that pays the bills as you acquire skills for the job you really want. You can even do that online, so you will not have to leave home to work or study!

What Is The Best Work-From-Home Job For A Stay At Home Parent?

Great remote work options for stay-at-home moms and dads include social media management, content or copywriting, and virtual babysitting. When looking for your perfect fit, flexible hours and good company culture should be your top priorities.

Keep in mind that certain work-from-home positions (transcriber, customer service rep, English teacher/tutor) may not be suitable for stay-at-home parents. Babies and toddlers require a lot of attention and can often be restless, disrupting a quiet work environment necessary for listening/talking to other people.

Moreover, stay-at-home parents often face a challenge trying to balance family responsibilities and focusing on work. Good organization (as much as possible), flexi-time, and an understanding boss are critical to success.
