Whether you are new to the world of finance or have been doing it for quite some time, remote finance jobs are worth considering, and opportunities are plentiful. Looking to work from home is a rising trend across the world, and job seekers will find that many job descriptions include the words “remote” or “flexible” in the description.

What Remote Jobs Are Available In Finance?

The field of finance offers several career paths to those with training, degrees, and experience in related areas. Many jobs can be done remotely.

Remote positions can include anything from staff accountants to members of a finance team to insurance adjusters or salespeople. The sky really is the limit when investigating the virtual workforce. Employers are now realizing that self-motivated workers are as or more productive than if they were in an office.

What Is The Most Rewarding Finance Job?

Aside from the generous salaries earned by many professionals in the field of finance, many jobs are rewarding because of the intrinsic nature of the work. Insurance professionals, for example, help people to protect themselves, their families, their homes, and their assets.

Another very rewarding job is working as a financial planner. Helping people to work and save through financial analysis as you assist them in preparing for retirement can be a great feeling as you watch people reach their goals and retire happy.

Those who manage the assets, cash flow, investment, risk management, and loss prevention functions for businesses can find the work challenging and worthwhile as they help businesses and institutions prosper.

Is Finance A High-Paying Job?

Finance, whether done part-time or full-time, has some excellent earning potential. The amount of money you can expect to make depends largely on your education, years of experience in the field, and your place on the corporate ladder.

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, the median annual wage for business and finance occupations was $76,570 in 2021. Other sources estimate the average entry-level finance salary to be $88,160.

The term “entry-level” is deceiving because candidates still need degrees in finance, accounting, or related fields, along with experience, and additional certifications to enter the field. Jobs such as accountants, finance managers, loan officers, or financial examiners might start out their careers with salaries in the $40,000 or 50,000s.

Some job titles will net you more compensation than others. As with any job, greater responsibility often brings higher pay. According to figures quoted by Topworkplaces.com, some high-level positions, such as Chief Financial Officer, Chief Compliance Officer, hedge fund manager, and financial advisor, can pay well over $100,000.

Necessary Skills for a Remote Job in Finance

In addition to knowledge specific to the field, successful candidates for finance need the following.

  • Analytical Skills: Hone in your analytical thinking skills.
  • Communication: This job requires strong communication skills, both verbal and written.
  • Computer Literacy: Knowing your way around a computer is essential for a remote position. This includes programs like Microsoft Word, Excel, Quickbooks, etc. Similar programs in Google would also suffice.
  • Math: For most jobs in finance, interested candidates would have strong math skills and be good with numbers.
  • Teamwork: Being a strong team member will help you in a finance work environment, even if you are working remotely.

Managing Work and Home Life Balance

When looking to balance work and home life, the key is to ensure you always have margin in your life, which can be challenging. Having margin in your life means you do not find yourself constantly obsessing about work. With any job type, you need to protect after-work hours to make time for family and friends. Ensuring you have an adequate amount of time off in the evening, on weekends, and for vacations/holidays is crucial to maintaining strong physical and mental health.

Working from home can increase that challenge because people often allow the lines to blur. Things to consider:

  • Avoid work email outside of the workday
  • Create a dedicated workspace
  • Plan meetings during work hours
  • Mute calls outside of work hours and answer messages the following day
  • Set work hours and try to stick to them

As with brick-and-mortar jobs, high-level remote finance jobs may require some long hours when tax deadlines approach and budgets or projects are due.
